Bus

All staff and children in Standard/Class 3 and younger travel to and from school on one of our 20 colourful buses. In Tanzania, there is no government assistance for school transport and poor public transport, so St Jude's relies on sponsorship and donation funds to purchase and maintain our buses. As a bus sponsor, your contribution goes directly towards the cost of diesel, maintenance, insurance and employment of reliable and responsible drivers. Operating these buses is an expensive cost to the school, but a necessary one for the students (over US$3,500 a week in diesel alone!).

Boarding Room for 8 Students

In 2008, we opened our first boarding school from Sunday evening to Friday for Standard/Class 4 students and above. Our children's parents have been requesting boarding school facilities for years, but we've been reluctant to do so, because of lack of human and financial resources. However, various welfare, educational and nutritional benefits prompted us to grant them their wish. It's been a huge success so far. Our kids don't have to wake up at 4:30am and walk down mountains to their bus stop; they don't have to do their homework by candlelight; they don't have to go to bed hungry; they don’t have to share a bed with 5 other relatives… We have seen a tremendous improvement in our students' health, concentration and academic performance.

To help cover the costs of the nutritious meals, building maintenance, electricity, water, boarding staff wages, and basic medical needs, we have introduced a "Sponsor a Boarding Room" program. By sponsoring a Boarding Room, you will be helping 8 boarders in one specific room by contributing to the provision of food, water, electricity, linen, extra lessons by qualified teachers, and supervision and mentoring by dedicated adult matrons and patrons.

Your contribution will help Boarding Room mates like Mary, Yasintha, Naisujaki, Mercy, Happiness, Madina, Victoria and Hadija below.

Your sponsorship will:

- help to provide water for your 8 boarders

- help to provide food for your 8 boarders

- help to provide adult mentoring and supervision for your 8 boarders

- help to provide electricity for your 8 boarders

Each morning, your 8 students wake up and they head off to school for the day - all fresh and ready to learn!

What can you expect to receive?

• You will receive an introductory bus file with photos of your bus' transformation into a colourful St Jude's bus, along with details of your bus driver
• You will receive an introductory file with photos of the 8 students you are helping to support, including their names, classes, and boarding school activities
• You will receive letters from the 8 students about their boarding experience throughout the year.
• You will also receive letters from students who ride on your St Jude’s bus.
• During the first term of each school year, you will be given an introductory file of the new 8 students in your Boarding School Room.

When you visit, you are more than welcome to meet students as your bus as it meanders around Arusha’s villages. After school, you can also visit the boarding facilities that your boarding room students enjoy, and even share an evening meal together in the dining hall!
