Student Appeal 2010
We are Appealing!
Yes, in more ways than one! We are the 1,319 students of St Jude's and we are appealing for your help! And we're pretty cute, too!
We love our school and know it is thanks to all of you out there that we have great facilities at our campuses - you are the force behind us becoming the future leaders in Tanzania. However, we are bursting out of our current classrooms and dormitories! This year 196 extra students squeezed in and next year we want around 200 more students to join us. But without your help that won't be possible.
This year we need to build 25 new classrooms, four new boarding houses, a new library and an art and music complex. Plus, we want to keep our buses running, our healthy diet and look after our great teachers.
Please help us by donating towards the following:
2010 Appeal A: The Great Walls of Arusha!
Needed: 3,000 square metres of brick wall at AUD$100 per sqm
We still need 4 square metres to reach this goal
We can watch our new buildings grow as 3,000 of you purchase a square metre of our brick walls. Put on your hard hats and join our 2010 construction team!
2010 Appeal B: My Own Desk and Chair!
Needed: 200 sets at AUD$150 per desk and chair set

Some of us are growing so fast our knees don't fit under the desks any more and we’re in trouble for messy writing – help!
2010 Appeal C: Yum... Rice and Beans for Lunch!
Needed: 400 lunches for one campus at AUD$300 per campus lunch

My 600 mates on my campus and I need our hot, nutritious lunches every day. Since I've been at St Jude's I don't get sick any more and I can learn much better because I'm not hungry.
2010 Appeal D: A Good Night's Sleep!
Needed: 85 bunk beds and bedding at AUD$500 per bunk bed and bedding

Luxury! My own bed with mattress, pillow, sheets and a mosquito net … luckily my bunk mate below me doesn't snore.
2010 Appeal E: Computers are Awesome!
Needed: 60 computers at AUD$1,000 per computer

My family is so proud of me because I can use a computer and one day I will have a really good job and earn money to help them.
2010 Appeal F: Keep That Motor Running!
Needed: 45 weeks of fuel at AUD$3,000 per week
We still need 22 weeks of fuel to reach this goal
Out of all the 20 colourful St Jude's buses my favourite is Big Yellow because it brings me safely to school every day. I would be very sad if it didn't come to pick me up one morning because it had no diesel.
2010 Appeal G: Makande Makes Us Strong!
Needed: 12 months of meals at AUD$5,000 per month
We still need 2 months of meals to reach this goal
Maize and beans cooked together makes our favourite meal, makande. With over 1,300 kids and 360 staff to feed, the cooks need lots of bags of these every month.
2010 Appeal H: Happy Teachers are Good Teachers!
Needed: 3 staff room furnishings at AUD$10,000 per staffroom

Our great teachers need to be organised so they can teach us well. They really need computers, desks, cupboards and chairs so they can plan our lessons and mark our homework properly.
2010 Appeal I: We Treasure Our Text Books!
Needed: 3 terms of text books at AUD$20,000 per term
We still need 2 terms of text books to reach this goal
I know I am very lucky to have a text book for all my classes because most kids in Tanzania don't get any... and they don't do well in their exams. I know all my 1300 school mates love having text books as well.
2010 Appeal J: Classy Classrooms!
Needed: 25 classrooms at AUD$30,000 per classroom
We still need 11 classrooms to reach this goal
We could do lessons under a tree but it gets hot and dusty sometimes and then it gets really cold and wet.
2010 Appeal K: Painting, Singing, Dancing and Drumming
Needed: 1 art and music complex at AUD$80,000

I reckon all of us are really good at dancing and singing and playing African drums and painting – we're not just good at maths!
2010 Appeal L: A Library Packed With Books - Our Dream!
Needed: 1 library at AUD$180,000

When I first came to St Jude's the teacher used to read us books and that was great but now I can read them myself and that's even better – I just finished the first Harry Potter book and I'm really excited about starting the next one!
2010 Appeal M: Home Away From Home!
Needed: 4 boarding houses at AUD$400,000 per boarding house

We all managed to squeeze into the boarding houses this year but next year there won't be room for the next classes. I would be so sad for those kids if they didn't get the chance to have good beds, healthy meals, clean water, extra lessons and kind people to look after them like we do.
