Aussie country kids proactive in learning about others - September 2008
Penny Meers visited St Jude's in September with a working Rotary group that helped build 70 benches for the secondary school opening next year. Penny is a Special Education teacher at Gilgandra Public School in central NSW. Gilgandra Public is a small country school which has just over 200 children in it.
Before she left to come over and spend 3 weeks working with the local teachers and students of St Jude, she decided to get her school involved in helping others as well. Penny says that “Making connections and learning about how other children in different parts of the world live is a very exciting experience.”
Penny was invited to the Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting where they asked her to present more information on St Jude’s. This made the SRC very keen to spread the word and raise awareness about The School of St Jude and goals it is achieving in Tanzania.

Penny with some her very dedicated students as they promote awareness for St Jude's; and prepare donations for the school.
So to work the SRC went. The SRC visited all classrooms in the school to promote awareness about St Jude’s and discuss the issues facing African education. They also used this opportunity to promote the jelly and ice-cream stall they were holding to further educate fellow students that there are people needier in the world than themselves.
This is the perfect sort of “Friends of St Jude” event, raising awareness and educating our youth about world issues at the same time.
Thank you Gilgandra Public School, we truly appreciate your efforts. We hope you learned a lot from this exercise as well.
Protea Sale - 2008
The Kay family from Australia put in a massive effort and had a protea sale to raise money and awareness for The School of St Jude. The main drive behind this event was Aimee, Jaidyn and Brodie Kay with the support of their parents Darren and Janene.
They displayed information on their sponsor child to let everyone know about the correspondance they receive from the school. Other merchandise was displayed, such as the 2008 calenders and Gemma's book, to give their customers more of an opportunity to learn about the school.

Melboune Toorak Rotary Event - April 2007
This awareness event was held in conjunction with Gemma's tour of Australia in promoting her new book, St Judes: a girl from Guyra, a school in Africa and the patron saint of hopeless causes.

The Freemans were the power behind the Toorak event

The event featured the Powerpoint presentation that is provided with "The Friends of St Jude" pack
Sydney Film Festival - June 2006

David and Penny Buckland settle in for the start of the movie
What a grand event! David Buckland CEO of Hunter Hall, Principal Sponsor of the SSF, and great supporter of St Jude's came up with the neat idea of linking two of his great passions in life. He gererously arranged for the books to be distributed to film fanatics on the opening night on the SSF. Our donations certainly went up after the festival – attendees must have needed a good relaxing read after all those movies!

Peter Hall, generous organiser of this St Jude's awareness event seems to be sitting under a leak in the State Theatre!
