From time to time a high skilled position becomes available at our school and if we are not able to fill it by employing a local person, we will we recruit from overseas.
However there is no short term volunteer program at the school as consistency and giving as many jobs as possible to local people, are priorities. The minimum commitment is:
-
- at least 1 year for advertised teaching related positions and
-
- at least 2 years for advertised administration positions.
-
- from time to time the school will advertise short term positions specific to a particular short term project needing to be completed.
When the school started back in 2002, we had one western worker for every 2 local workers. However today we are proud to say that for every western worker we have over 30 local workers at the school, so this is really encouraging as we work towards sustainability of the school. There are now only a few positions still needed to be filled by westerners as our local team is getting stronger and stronger each year.
Western workers are paid a small stipend per month with is enough to live on (but not enough to travel around Africa on).
1. The commitment to the school for all teaching related positions is at least 1 year. For administration positions it is for at least 2 years (as the school is now quite a big operation and so consistency with staff is essential)
The school year is from January to December. Generally, for teaching staff, the starting date is in the first week of January and the school year ends in the first week of December. However depending on the positions advertised on this website, we take new workers (such as admin staff) on at the school all year round as we are continually increasing our student and academic staff numbers...and therefore admin staff.
There are three school terms. Holidays are approximately in the beginning of May and the end of August for three weeks. Each term also has a mid-term break of a week. The year’s confirmed term timetable becomes available towards the end of the previous year and will be written up here as soon as we have them. Just email Gemma on schoolofstjude@habari.co.tz and ask for a copy of the year term dates.
2. Successful applicants arrive two weeks before the start of the school year.
It will be a stress-free start if everyone is relaxed and confident of his or her new role on the first day of the school year so new staff would need to get to the school soon after New Year. Any new administration team members arriving at the beginning of the new year would be required to start at least a week before opening day to assist with the preparation for students and academic staff, and to assimilate into the position allotted to them.
3. Remuneration
Western staff from overseas are paid between 375,000 and 450,000 Tanzanian Shillings per month, which is around US$340, once they agree to commit to work at the school for the agreed 1 to 2 years minimum (depending on their job description). All western staff must pass a probation period which lasts for a minimum three months, maximum six months. At the end of the first three-month period the staff member will have a chance to review his or her decision to work at the school and the Deputy Director will take the opportunity to assess the staff member’s contribution. The small stipend paid may also increase depending on the agreed job description and contract time commitment
Part of the remuneration package is accommodation at the school (detailed below in point 4).
4. Accommodation and Amenities
Western staff are given accommodation in basic, modern, clean, single or double self-contained units with private toilet and shower. Pillows, sheets and towels are available but you may prefer to bring your own.
Moshono Campus
The large town of Arusha is about a 20-minute drive along an extremely rough and dusty road but once there you can purchase most of life’s necessities – as long as you’re not too spoilt and not too fussy about the quality! There are supermarkets as well local produce markets, which are relatively cheap for fruit and vegetables, and even a fairly decent bottle of wine can be found.
You can treat yourself to a night on the town at a western style restaurant, bar or disco or for a fun and economical night out, the local restaurants, bars and nightclubs provide great entertainment. A common room is available in which to socialise, enjoy communal meals, browse the library books or keep up-to-date with the details of meetings and social events placed on the notice board.
There are enjoyable walks around the village, often a game of volleyball is on the go and social and sports clubs in Arusha can be sourced for you. When there is electricity or the generator is working, there are opportunities to watch DVDs, listen to music and use the Internet. Please remember that we are situated on the outskirts of a large town in a developing country in a severe drought. With little to no water available to drive the turbines of the country’s hydro-electric scheme, the area is suffering regular power cuts for up to 24 hours per day as well as an infrequent water supply – about the only thing we have plenty of is dust!
However, if you have packed lots of patience, tolerance, perseverance and a great sense of humour, you will have a fabulous time!
Usa River Campus
The Facilities at Usa River are just two years old. The school is a purpose-built Primary Campus accommodating 350 boarders and 350 day students. The volunteer quarters building has 4 two-bedroom units with shared kitchen each, one one-bedroom unit with kitchen. All bedrooms come with en-suite. There is also a large communal kitchen. Meals can be taken with the boarders 5 days a week, or you can self cater on a gas cooker, pay for your own gas.
Our Usa River Campus Is 20 km East of Arusha (Moshono Campus) on the Moshi road, half-way to Mount Kilimanjaro International Airport. It is 2 kms north of the highway on the Momella road ( the way to the Arusha National Park) Its entrance gate is a 500m walk from Ngurdoto Lodge, an up-market, somewhat expensive lodge with bar, dining, souvenirs and a swimming pool. There is a limited Dalla service on the Momella road, but on the highway a dalla trip to Arusha is TSH 500/-\
The town of Usa River is a ten minute taxi ride away, at about TSH 3,000 each way. Market days are Thursday and Sunday, and it boasts a small supermarket with beer-garden, self-serve meals, ATM and banking facilities, hair salon and Internet cafe further along the road at Usa Plaza. There are a number of good safari lodges in the area serving top class meals with pleasant surroundings including a small wild-life park at Mt Meru Game Park. UsaRiver staff may have the use of one of the small school buses on a pre arranged/ emergency basis. There are opportunities to socialize with the larger number of Western staff at Moshono with a daily bus through the week leaving at 9am and back at 3 pm. On Saturday morning a shopping bus leaves at 8.30 from Usa and arrives back at 12 Midday. There is nearly always an opportunity to book accommodation at Moshono Friday and Saturday nights; just email the Visitor Coordinator.
